Commodity Chemicals

Commodity chemicals are widely used across oil and gas operations due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and essential role in maintaining process efficiency. Unlike specialty chemicals, they are generally produced in bulk and applied in multiple applications, ranging from drilling and production to processing and water treatment. Key commodity chemicals include:

1. Ethylene Glycols (MEG, DEG, TEG)

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG): Used primarily as a hydrate inhibitor in natural gas processing and as a coolant in industrial systems.

Di Ethylene Glycol (DEG): Applied as a solvent in gas dehydration, resins, and plasticizer production.

Tri Ethylene Glycol (TEG): The preferred glycol for natural gas dehydration due to its high water absorption capacity and thermal stability.

2. Butyl Glycol (EGMBE)

Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (EGMBE), also known as Butyl Glycol, is a solvent with excellent surface-active properties. It is commonly used in cleaning agents, degreasers, and as a coupling agent in water-based drilling and production fluids.

3. Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA)

Monoethanolamine (MEA): Widely used for gas sweetening (removal of CO₂ and H₂S).

Diethanolamine (DEA): Applied in gas treatment, surfactant production, and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis.

Triethanolamine (TEA): Used as a corrosion inhibitor, emulsifier, and pH regulator in industrial processes.

4. Barite (Various Grades)

Barite (barium sulfate) is a critical weighting agent in drilling fluids, ensuring hydrostatic pressure control, wellbore stability, and blowout prevention. Different grades are selected based on particle size and density requirements.

5. Bentonite (Various Grades)

Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay with high swelling and rheological properties. In drilling, it functions as a viscosifier, filtration control agent, and suspension stabilizer. Specialty grades are used in civil engineering and environmental sealing applications.

6. Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum is a biopolymer used as a viscosifier and suspension agent in drilling and completion fluids. It provides excellent carrying capacity for cuttings and enhances fluid stability under a wide range of temperatures and salinities.
